This is useful and unique to Privacy Guard. This freezes my phone and duplicates what Android's app permissions system already does, just not for the same set of permissions.Ĭounting how many times permissions were granted/denied. Prompting the user when apps try to use particular permissions. This led me to reconsider what it's actually good for and if it's a high priority for developers to give it the overhaul it clearly needs.Īs far as I can tell, Privacy Guard has these main functions: While I couldn't find this particular issue, I did see a lot of other threads about it being broken or breaking things. Wondering if "Always ask" freezing devices was I known issue, I searched for Privacy Guard in this Reddit. I'm glad I didn't set any "Always ask" restrictions on startup apps!Īn Exploration of What Privacy Guard Does and How Well It Works Today When I opened the app again, it worked fine and my phone didn't freeze. After forcibly rebooting my phone again, I set the permission to "Ignore". Then I realized that the apps had the Privacy Guard restriction in common. On Tuesday (today), I tried opening another app I'd set to prompt me for external storage access. Eventually, I found that uninstalling the app, rebooting, restoring from backup, and rebooting again fixed it. Rolling back to last week's LOS build didn't help, and neither did restoring the app's apk+data from a known good backup. Thinking it was just a random glitch, I held down the power button for several seconds to force a reboot. The clock kept running for a few seconds, and the power button turned off the screen (the capacitive buttons stayed backlit), but nothing else responded. On Monday, I tried running one of the apps and my phone (OnePlus One, recently updated to Monday's LOS 15 build) stalled out. Curious about what they might be using external storage for, I set read and write permissions to "Always ask". I saw a bunch of apps with external storage usage that's doesn't seem relevant to my actual usage of the apps. On Sunday I looked thru the apps listed under Security & privacy -> Trust -> Privacy Guard -> -> Advanced ->.
